Exchanging our Empty Lives for More

written by Amber

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. 1 Peter 1:18

There is nothing more humbling than realizing that the lives that we’ve inherited from our ancestors are completely empty in comparison to the lives that we are able to lead after accepting Christ’s salvation.

Generally when I think of an inheritance, I think of receiving something of great value. Perhaps a trust fund with an astronomical amount of monies, or maybe a family business that’s traditionally passed down from generation to generation. There are many things of great value that each of our families may have accomplished just so that we may one day have and cherish them. These things, while not inherently bad are the very things that empty lives can be comprised of.

Let’s take a look at 1 John 2:16-17 NLT: “For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.”

When I pair these two scriptures, I think of our lives as empty cups. The world (society, the government, the education system, our families etc.) are all looking to fill our cups with pride in our businesses, our degrees, our family names and various possessions and accolades. The only thing is when we allow our cup to be filled with the craving of more and more, it never truly gets filled because the size of what we desire is insatiable. We will never have enough or be enough if we do not prioritize our desires in life. But if we are seeking after the things of God through fasting, prayer, meditation of the bible and worship, the Lord will begin to satiate us. (John 6:35) Our cups will actually have the opportunity to overflow so that we will never thirst or desperately hunger for things that distract us from God.

Engaging in Our Relationship with Christ

written by Amber

I recently cried myself through the entire book of 1 Peter. I have no idea what the Holy Spirit was doing in me but I cried the entire time while reading. Within the first few versus, Peter says that as a result of God knowing and choosing us, that His spirit has (or will) make us holy. (1 Peter 1:2)

Oftentimes during bible study I like to question the text, so that I have a deeper understanding of what the Holy Spirit may be trying to teach me. So I asked the Lord, “How may I be made holy, by your spirit?” I know that simply professing Christ is not going to result in me becoming instantly holy as God in heaven is holy, so I began to think about sin.

All of God’s children are clothed in flesh (a sinful nature) which actively wants to oppose the holy lifestyle that is calling us to lead. (Galatians 5:19-21 NLT) So I began to think of how one may grow in something like lust. For me it started as a small pornographic seed that was shown to me as a child and eventually out of my own curiosity I began to seek out materials that would excite the lust in me. Young Adult and Adult Fiction Romances, steamy make out sessions with my lusty boyfirend, pornographic materials on the web. My feelings of lust began to grow so strong that I felt as if I would break my vow to remain a virgin until marriage. (Video all about my struggle with pornography and masturbation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw3VVehkG20&t=20s) Praise God that that wasn’t the case and that the Holy Spirit kept me from breaking my vow!

I said all of that to say that whatever we are engaged in, is going to grow strong within us and this is in regards to anything. I believe that in order to be holy as God in heaven is holy, that we must engage with Him. Just as I engaged in activities that would end up growing the lust in me, we must do our due diligence and be intentional about allowing the Holy Spirit to grow within us so that we may become stronger in Christ and holier with each passing day.

In order to be holy, we must engage in our relationship in Christ. We can engage with Christ through things like prayer, fasting, worship, and meditating on the words in the bible on a daily basis. The Lord is looking to have a relationship with us and the good news is that he already knows everything there is to know about us and he loves and accepts us just as we are. But the even better news is that when we engage in our relationship with Christ, we may start as someone who is broken, addicted and experiencing so much inner anxiety and worthlessness, but through time spent with Him, we can be made holy! What amazing news this is!

So please be encouraged! The only way that we can achieve being more Christ-like and holy, is to engage with God so that he will have the opportunity to change our hearts and our minds one day at a time!

I love you much!

Facing Opposition

Facing Opposition

written by Amber

I recently watched a great sermon that you can find here on our significance in the body of Christ and how we experience his presence in times of need: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nBSafyCXuGI

Facing opposition can be tough sometimes, especially in the body of Christ.

I think that some of us are under the impression that we’re suppose to be living these picture perfect lives with everything that we’ve ever wanted simply because of the God that we serve.

As bearers of Christ’s name, we are not promised a perfect life, but the assurance of being taken care of by a perfect God in this life and the next.

I know there have been times where I’ve experienced something that I consider to be a trying time and my immediate thought was “God did I miss you?” In the moment I just thought to myself that there is no way God would have allowed me to come here to be treated this way.

It’s in these trying times that God is allowing us to be refined and made new! He’s building up great godly character and integrity in us during these times where we feel lost, confused and sometimes hurt.

I’m learning all over again not to run from the process, but to run to it. There will be days where we are tired, days where we don’t understand and days where we just don’t want to put up with the things that are happening in our lives.

I want to encourage you guys to unplug and seek God. I truly believe it is that easy to seek Him. To unplug every distraction that we have going on in our lives and focus on the one who can truly give us direction concerning the perfect will that he has for our lives.

So if this means adjusting the settings of your social media notifications, cutting down on the amount of time that we spend watching TV, or hanging out with ungodly influences we have to take action. We are as close to Christ as we want to be and if we’re intentional about abiding in him he will also abide in us!

So let’s show God how important he is to us, seeking him in prayer, worshiping him in our free time and studying the Bible to connect with his Holy Spirit, daily!

Love you!

When Church Feels Like Work

When Church Feels Like Work

written by Amber

When you’ve matured in Christ and see what the Lord is doing at your local church, it’s hard not to want to get involved. Your pastor mentions a few ministries that need a little TLC and you find yourself signed up for any and everything hoping that the Lord will be proud of your service, you’ll make new friends and have the opportunity to grow and learn.

I remember having the opportunity to serve at the bookstore as a volunteer. I could hide behind a counter of snacks and giggle and high-five with the babies that came in to visit. I didn’t have to stand in front of the congregation and be seen and  I got to interact with members and first time guests every week. I enjoyed it. On days that someone forgot to open the store, I would make sure to open it. It was the perfect ministry for me. Low-key and easy.

Before long, the bookstore director had gotten married and decided that she didn’t want to head up the store anyone. She recognized that I had been a good volunteer and asked me to be the new director. I didn’t know how to say “no” so I said “yes.” A few days later I had a flurry of e-mails and volunteer phone numbers and new responsibilities. I had also found myself signed up for the Intercessory team, Accounting team, and I had the opportunity to look over my pastors little one’s with a few other young ladies as well.

There were some Sunday’s where I would show up at 8:00AM and I wouldn’t leave church until 3:00PM. I would join service late, since the store was open during the beginning of praise and worship and I would leave early to open the store again before dismissal. Some Sunday’s I had the opportunity to stay for praise and worship but would leave when the message began. I was all over the place. Every single Sunday.

So if I could encourage you in anything at all, it’s to:

  • Choose a maximum of 2 OR 3 ministries (depending on which ones you choose. Some don’t require as much as others)
  • Make time to study your bible and spend time with God DAILY. I couldn’t always depend on hearing the word or attending praise and worship in its entirety, so I learned that I needed to worship and study the word outside of Sunday’s and Wednesday’s at church.
  • Learn to say “no”, sometimes. It’s ultra flattering when people want you to spearhead different things or lead certain groups, but if you don’t think that you’ll be able to serve effectively, then I wouldn’t consider taking on any additional responsibilities.
  • HAVE FUN! Join a ministry that you can enjoy being a part of. In turn you’ll serve the Lord cheerfully and those whom you’re serving and serving with will see how much you enjoy doing what you’re doing and it may inspire others to serve in the house of the Lord too!

Comment down below your favorite ministries to be a part of!

Getting What You Want From God

Getting What You Want From God

written by Amber

I want to start off by saying that there is absolutely no way that we are able to manipulate God. It’s impossible. He is no respecter of persons and doesn’t play favorites. He loves all of his children equally even though we are all so vastly different. We are alike however in our likeness of him. The Bible says that we were all made in the image of the Lord, we were made in his likeness. But I digress, I just came up with the witty title in hopes that I would be seen as a creative.
(Is it working? lol)

Though we are not able to manipulate God, we are able to position ourselves through sacrifice, prayer, fasting and consecration to connect ourselves with him in a way that we wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

For instance say a person is drowning in sin, unable to stop what they’re doing, unrepentant and ashamed. It may be hard to spend time in Gods presence or to even think of spending time with God in general. There is a chasm between God and that person and we all know that God isn’t the one who enacted the silent treatment.

On the complete opposite side of the spectrum is someone who humbles themselves in prayer and fasting. Someone who is actively repentant and seeking the Lords advice to lead them through life.

I want to be clear that the difference between these two people is not that one is sinless, but repentant and making steps toward change, and by the power of the Holy Spirit is being sanctified.

Matthew 6:33 NLT says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

This looks like a set of pretty clear cut instructions to get me on track to living in the perfect will that God has for my life. The first part of this verse is an active COMMAND. We are to desire God’s kingdom over everything else that we desire. What is the kingdom of God for those of us living on earth trying to pursue it? One thing that comes to mind is God’s dominion. We are to seek God’s dominion, his rule, his kingdom and kingship above all else in life. Basically we are to seek God’s leadership above all else.  The word of God was divinely inspired by him and holds the information that we as Christian’s need to seek his Kingdom. I would consider this book to be the main avenue in which we are to learn about the Lord’s kingdom and how to actively pursue it.

We are living in a fallen world and the only reason that we would want to seek the kingdom of God above all else is so that we know that the Lord’s will and work are being done through us here on earth.

The second part of this command is to live RIGHTEOUSLY. This ties into being repentant and mature in your faith. Seeking help for struggles that seem unending and casting down wicked thoughts that say you will always commit the same sins, thoughts that say you’ll never change. We must die unto our flesh and live righteously. We must have some integrity about ourselves and continue to press towards the mark of a high calling.

The last part of this verse is the best part of this verse. It says that the Lord will give us everything that we NEED. I want to be clear that it says everything that we need, not everything that we want. Though I’ve known God to supply all of my needs and sometimes the things that I want, I want you to see that the promise lies therein the things that we need not the things that we want.

But if we really think about it, the things that we need should be the things that we want. We should desire the things of God and the more time that we spend with him and the more like him that we are, the more we will desire the things in life that he desires for us.

On top of that, the things that we need are what will get us walking in our purpose. The things that we need will get us accomplishing the will of God. The things that we need will get us in right standing with God.

So this week think of ways that you can start seeking the kingdom of God first. Maybe it means taking a break from social media or your Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts. Maybe it means prioritizing and making a conscious effort to show the Lord that you love him and care about his leadership through journaling, prayer or worship. However you decide to tackle this, stay focused and note how you see the Lord making changes in your life.

Love you,

Amber

God’s Preparation

written by Amber

King David’s story is one of great adventure, passion and God’s infinite grace. Reading through first and second Samuel are probably some of my greatest past times. I love reviewing his life from beginning to end, seeing how every step of the way the Lord was preparing him for the things to come.

This can be said about pretty much any man or woman in the Bible, but today’s focus will be on King David and how his life’s story correlates with the rest of our lives.

The most memorable victory in David’s life has got to be when he faces off with a Philistine giant named Goliath. 1 Samuel 17 depicts the battle in its entirety. The portion of the story that stands out to me is David’s confidence in the Lord giving him victory over Goliath.

David reminisces on times during his shepherding that the Lord had allowed for him to protect his father’s flock of sheep saying, “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from his mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death.”

I can’t even imagine my teenage self slaying monstrous animals in the wild, let alone chasing after them to take back what is mine.

But I can attest to having to deal with an extremely difficult boss on the job at the age of seventeen. It was my very first job (at a fast food restaurant) and my boss had made it clear that she did not like me. Every time I saw her car parked outside of the establishment before a shift, this feeling of dread would fill the pit of my stomach and I immediately wanted to go home. Even after we had spoken and settled our differences, I always associated seeing her car parked outside with negativity and would have to remind myself that things had gotten better.

Later in life I would find myself working for much more difficult people who were rude, unkind and unfair toward me, but I was able to serve them confidently. Having experienced difficulty on the job before, interacting with people who seemed 10X’s worst than my entry level job was easier. The Lord had given me confidence to serve those who seemed unservable, promoting me in the process and showing me how valued I was by him.

I imagine that David felt the same confidence that you and I experience when the Lord allows for us to go through certain things to prepare us for something much bigger in the future.

Though I must say that in the process, it rarely feels like you’ve got it all together and sometimes you even find yourself questioning why you’re experiencing hardship. I’ll bet David’s adrenaline was off the charts as he went up against the first lion who crossed his path. I can imagine him running home to tell his father what had happened and praying that it never happened again.

It was in those very moments that God was preparing David to face Goliath.

What are some areas in your life where you feel as though you’re being tested and tried? How can you positively assess the situation to see what the Lord is trying to strengthen in you? I know it’s not easy, and sometimes you can’t even fathom how some things are working out for your good. In those moments I encourage you to continue to stand on the word of God and your integrity. Lean into the Holy Spirit and once you’ve past through the storm you can look back and see the fruit of the spirit and the character that the Lord has built within you.

Love always,

Amber

What are you wearing?

What are you wearing?

written by Amber

I recently had a conversation with a friend about the different sins that people in the faith may struggle with and how some sins are more taboo than others and how some sins are also more visible than others.

In my mind I saw this gorgeous girl sashaying around in this beautiful shawl. It draped around her just so and she couldn’t seem to go anywhere without receiving a compliment. Outwardly there was nothing you could find about her that was unattractive.

Some of us wear our sin outwardly in the form of homosexuality, cussing and fussing with those around us when things don’t go our way. Sometimes we lie because if we’re being honest we lie more than we tell the truth most days.

Some sins are hidden. Beneath the shawl no one can see us struggling with addiction to things like pornography or masturbation. No one can see how many people we’ve taken advantage of and allowed to take advantage of us. No one can see the suicidal thoughts or bitterness buried deep within our hearts. No one can see the covetousness or jealousy that we feel, scrolling though social media.

No matter the sin or how we wear it, we have to hold ourselves accountable to living a life that our Abba father can be proud of.

I love Ephesians 4:22 NLT. It tells us to, “throw off [our] old sinful nature and [our] former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.”
‭‭
We are encouraged to throw off habits and characteristics of our old selves and to put on the armor of God and allow Holy Spirit to make us more like Christ. I like that the scripture suggests “throwing off our old sinful nature.”

To throw something often takes effort and a strong sense of direction. A simple game of “catch” can be incredibly frustrating when you’re playing with someone whose not really paying attention or putting in any real effort to get the ball where it needs to go.

Our sin is the same way. We will continue to feel tired and frustrated until we decide to be intentional in our efforts to throw away the things in our lives that are not like Christ.

What are some steps that you plan on taking to rid yourself of habitual sins in your life? Might I suggest finding someone in the faith to hold you accountable? Joining a church that loves the word of God and encourages you to renew your mind in it daily. Fasting and praying for a serious change in your heart. The list is endless and Holy Spirit is the perfect helper. Ask him how to overcome your sin and practice obeying what it is that he suggests.

Love you,

Amber

Bible Snob

written by Amber

Me to Me:“Don’t be a Bible snob all your life.”

And when I say “Bible snob”, I’m not talking about using the word to reprimand people, I’m talking about using the Bible to distance ourselves from others.

When I first got saved I was on FIRE for the Lord! He was waking me up at all hours of the morning, showing me such amazing and great things in the word! Holy Spirit would teach me about any and everything that I asked him about. There were days where I would have to sit at his feet for awhile waiting to hear his voice and other days, I could hear his responses so clearly and immediately.

I grew accustomed to waking up early and spending time with Holy Spirit. I actually understood the messages at church and sometimes the Pastor would even preach on something that Holy Spirit and I had already talked about!

Needless to say, I also felt spoiled. I turned my noise up at study plans and daily devotionals. Holy Spirit was all I needed. I felt like reading studies or the footnotes in my Bible was “cheating.” I wanted Holy Spirit to teach me, not someone else.

I want to encourage you not to make the same mistake that I did. Think of study plans and daily devotionals as a supplement. The Bible will always be our main source of documentation for connecting with Christ. Everything else is there to help guide us through life.

I’m currently prepping for my second body building competition. I’m taking vitamins and protein supplements, but these things are not meant to take the place of my meals. They are there to help aid my body in staying strong and healthy. I like to think of study plans and daily devotionals the same way.

Gone are the days that I turn my noise up at things that can supplement my spiritual walk with God. Holy Spirit has even inspired me to write “Biblically Me” small group study’s and these blogs. It’s humbled me, knowing that the content that myself and so many others in the body of Christ put out is for His Kingdom. Like the Bible, our studies and devotionals were created to point you to Christ.

I also think of it as another form of fellowship. Jesus said that we would do greater works that Him and He was right. He didn’t have access to the World Wide Web, or social media or any of that! So take advantage of every study, small group, daily devotional, podcast, YouTube sermon, but most importantly every quiet moment you can have with God!

It will ALWAYS be worth it!

Don’t Walk Alone

written by Amber

I’ve traveled my entire life, living a highly nomadic lifestyle because of my daddy’s s career in the military. Looking back traveling was probably my favorite thing about his career and I think that it allowed me to experience a great amount of diversity at a young age.

Living in a foreign country and learning bits and pieces of different languages was amazing. Lord willing, my babies will be able to experience the same diversity that I got to experience while growing up.

Even though I’ve traveled a lot, last year was the first time that l traveled  to a new state all by myself. One of my best friends and I had fallen out of touch with one another, and grew a part. It was probably one of the toughest things for me to get past. As a “NAVY brat” having friends for years at a time wasn’t really a possibility for me. As we traveled, keeping up with friends was impossible until social media became popular and even then, so much time had transpired between me and all of my childhood classmates.

As time progressed work kind of took over my life here in Texas and all of my “friends” were people that I worked with. I have a few people from back home in Orlando that I could call but nothing felt the same.

When I would slip and fall, I felt so alone and that I didn’t have anyone to talk to. The enemy (satan) would make me feel like I had no one to turn to, and that I would forever be clothed in shame.

If you’re feeling this way, I want you to know that you’re never alone. The enemy will try to isolate us into thinking that God is upset with us and that we have nowhere and no one to turn to. You may even be feeling too ashamed to tell a friend what’s going on with you, but I encouraged you to share anyways! The Bible says in James 5:16, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” NLT

I recently had the opportunity to call a beautiful sister in Christ who really helped me in a time of extreme anxiety and fear. Another tip for trying to navigate your true feelings from the enemy is to really gage how you would truly react. By nature I have never been an anxious or fearful person. So to feel such overwhelming feelings of anxiety, stress and fear to the point of tears I knew it had to be the enemy. I also knew that I needed some spiritual help and accountability.

After you’ve confessed your sins to God and commited yourself to repentance, also tell a friend who you can trust with your heart. Having someone to pray with and hold you accountable to your repentance is amazing.

I believe that when God said that man should not be alone while looking over Adam in the garden,  it wasn’t just in reference to romantic relationships, but ALL relationships.

Don’t be afraid to reach out when you’re struggling. We all need to be able to walk with Jesus and the brothers and sisters in Christ that he has given us.

Love you!

Amber

I’m not a Libra, I’m a Christian.
BlogScripture

I’m not a Libra, I’m a Christian.

written by Amber

I find it extremely concerning when anyone belonging to Christ claims to be a Virgo, Libra or Pisces. It’s not that I have a particular problem with these signs, but astrology as a whole.

  1. Astrology is the study that assumes and attempts to interpret the influence of the heavenly bodies [stars] on human affairs.

Studying astrology or looking up our horoscopes every blue moon shifts our focus from being led by the holy spirit, to what the stars are seemingly telling us will happen in each season of our lives. Some may say “It’s not that serious, no one really believes those things.” Then why ascribe to a particular sect based on your birthday? Why include it in your Instagram bio? Why hashtag it in all of your birthday pictures if “nobody really believes in those things?”

The bible is very clear about our involvement with things of a divining nature:

“When you begin living in the towns the Lord your God is giving you, a man or woman among you might do evil in the sight of the Lord your God and violate the covenant. For instance, they might serve other gods or worship the sun, the moon, or any of the stars—the forces of heaven—which I have strictly forbidden.” Deuteronomy 17:2-3 NLT

The Lord is clear about his expectation for us as his people. Sure this passage is from the Old Testament, but the New Testament declares that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. There is nothing giving a concession for astrology or horoscopes as it relates to the will of God for our lives.

The stars in the sky were actually created to worship the Lord, not dictate our lives or purpose in specific seasons.

“Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you twinkling stars!” Psalms 148:3 NLT

I challenge you to see how participating in astrology strips us of our faith. Faith is the assurance of things unseen and seeking our destiny within the stars is the complete opposite of that. It is impossible to please God without having faith and even more so when we are worshiping the stars that he created and not him as the creator.

So be encouraged!

I would stop ascribing yourself to a particular season be it “Libra Season” or “Virgo Season.” There are so many babes in the faith that are looking up to those of us who have been in this salvation game for awhile. As children often do what they see others doing versus investigating what it is that they see, it is important that we are setting a good example.

Love you!
